What Does Record Retention Have to Do With HIPAA?
According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, PHI “transmitted in any form of media, whether electronic, paper, or oral” is subject to HIPAA regulations, which makes sense, given that digital channels have become the primary mode of communication in the rapidly innovating healthcare industry. Although HIPAA doesn’t have a medical records retention period — these are, instead, defined on a state-by-state basis — all HIPAA-related documents must be retained for a minimum of six years.
